You Can Help, Get LakeSmart!

LakeSmart is a program coordinated at the Maine Lakes Society and locally run on individual watersheds, ponds and lakes. It’s a voluntary program in which concerned shorefront property owners can request an evaluation of their property. This evaluation is geared towards protection of lake water quality.

It involves evaluating 4 categories:

Driveway and Parking

Structures and Septic System

Yard-Recreation Area-Footpaths

Buffer-Water Access

Trained evaluators will visit your property for the evaluation. You will need to complete the pre-evaluation questionnaire.

During the visit, we will walk the property, take notes and pictures, then review the evaluation with you and (if you choose) walk the property with us and we will review the findings and suggestions. The evaluation is submitted to the Maine Lakes Society LakeSmart Program. If it is agreed that the property scores high in 3 categories, then a letter of commendation is given. If the property scores high in all 4 categories, then you will receive two LakeSmart signs for posting on the road and on your lake. You will receive a written review as well.

The evaluation should be done prior to September 15 if possible.
